CANON INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: Alastor
CANON: Viewtiful Joe (Featuring Dante from Devil May Cry)
HISTORY: Alastor is an ancient and powerful devil, referred to in legend as the Spirit of Lightning or the Lightning Devil and sealed away on the Island Closest to Hell for two-thousand years, trapped within his own blade. The exact chain of events that led to his sealing is unknown, but from his generally benevolent attitude and fondness for humans, it’s quite likely that he was punished for defying the emperor of the underworld, Mundus, during his war against humanity. Whatever the case, it was on that island that he first met Dante, attempting to enslave him but ending up overpowered and bound as the half-demon’s servant.

Dante used Alastor, along with another demonic weapon found on the island, to fight his way to Mundus’ throne room. However, upon returning from defeating the demon emperor, the Devil Hunter relegated both of his new weapons to storage. Insulted, hurt and frustrated by the neglect, Alastor eventually chose to abandon his master.

It isn’t known how Alastor ended up in Movieland, but he made himself right at home when he did. Over time, he came to view the famous hero Captain Blue as his rival, and became a senior officer in an evil organization known as Jadow. He made it his mission in life to defeat a true hero, an accomplishment that he believed would bring peace to his volatile heart. But before he could defeat Blue, someone else did. Blue was then replaced by a fledgling hero from outside of Movieland called Joe who inherited his powers to rescue Silvia, who he had been on a date with when they’d both been stuck in Movieland.

While Alastor was initially unimpressed with Joe, the young man managed to show potential. With the knowledge that Joe could eventually become a great hero, Alastor began learning about him with the intent of molding him into a new rival. In the process, he ended up bonding with Silvia and even seemed to develop a crush on her. Through their interactions, she came to realize that while Alastor claimed to be a villain, he was really a decent person at heart. This fact was further illustrated when he volunteered a truce with Joe to help a sick child.

With everyone else accusing Alastor of not being as evil as he claimed, he began to feel he had something to prove. This is what led him to threatening the lives of both Silvia and Joe’s sidekick, whom he had also grown fond of, while fighting Joe after he proved to finally be a worthy opponent. He very nearly killed Joe, but the leader of Jadow had other plans and interrupted the fight.

The next time Alastor saw Joe, the hero had infiltrated Jadow headquarters and was in a losing battle against Fire Leo, one of Jadow's elite officers. Refusing to let his rival lose to someone else, and having calmed down from their last conflict enough to accept he wanted to see Jadow fall, Alastor interrupted the fight and restrained the flaming lion. The two fell off the edge of a cliff, leaving Alastor gravely wounded and severely weakened.

STRENGTHS:
Cunning: Anyone who deals with Alastor will quickly realize that he's intelligent, quick to catch on to when people are hiding something. He also shows skill at arranging events to suit him, even setting up a difficult challenge to test his rival's personal character.
Courteous: While he's frequently obnoxious for the sake of his own entertainment, he's capable of being incredibly charming when need be. When it comes to interacting with people he wants to ask favors of, he's polite and friendly, treating even a prisoner as though he was a guest in her home.
Patient: When faced with a choice between getting something over with or reaching a more satisfying conclusion, he's willing to wait and play the long game for the sake of getting what he really wants. Even if this means going out of his way, such as sparing a promising new hero and advising him for the sake of being able to fight him at his best.
FLAWS:
Proud: His greatest weak point, his pride not only prevents him from using any battle tactic that might be underhanded, it also leaves him loathe to ask for help or admit weakness. Even when grievously injured and deteriorating, he's unwilling to even admit to being weakened until he outright collapses.
Stubborn: While his willingness to stick with something long-term can be a benefit, he often takes it to an extreme of refusing to change his mind on something even when it's turned destructive. It takes an extreme situation to make him change course, and often he'll double down when challenged, even to the point of running counter to his other desires or beliefs.
Temperamental: While normally intelligent, the name 'Alastor' means 'one who avenges', and it shows through his response to provocation. When angered, he lashes out loudly and often violently against the source of his frustration, without any thought to the consequences. In the most severe of circumstances, this can even lead to him hurting those he holds dear, because he was blinded by his rage in a moment when his actions were putting them in danger.

CANON ABILITIES:
Super strength: While it's never been explicitly measured, someone who is roughly his equal in terms of raw power once lifted at least seven tons over his head with ease. Who knows what his upper limit is, but it's probably somewhere in the double digits tons wise.
Inhuman agility: He's a lightning demon, of course he has absurd reflexes.
Durability: He can take kicks that would shatter concrete and only be knocked off balance.
Regeneration: He's been known to go from the verge of death to fit to fight in a matter of seconds upon having his powers restored. It's also a running gag in the games version that he never stays dead, which may be related to the fact that part of his soul is in an object elsewhere.
Weather control: He can control lightning, wind and clouds on a whim, able to create a storm that spanned as far as the eye could see on open ocean purely as a backdrop for his dramatic entrance.
Magic: While most of his magic is lightning or wind based, he does know a few non-elemental spells. The most notable is Air Hike, which creates a brief platform of magic under his feet for him to spring off of.
Flight: This renders Air Hike virtually useless, of course, but it's always good to have multiple options. Curiously, he almost never seems to actually flap his wings when flying, so it's more than likely a levitation effect.
Shapeshifting: He can, at the very least, change the size of his wings and take on a more human appearance. He can also turn into a sword, but he's not likely to do this very often.
Swordsmanship: He's not called the blademaster for nothing, okay? He can also throw his swords with great accuracy and control them telekinetically.
Sword production: There is no known limit to the number of identical copies of his original sword that he can pull out of nowhere. Presumably they're made of magic.
Potential for greatness: A large portion of Alastor's power is sealed away in the original copy of his sword, which is still hanging on Dante's wall somewhere. If he ever gets his hands on that sword or gets a boost of power to make up for it, he'll be able to change to his Underworld Emperor form, which is twice the size of a human and a whole lot more powerful than he is now. Though he doesn't know it, even that isn't his full power. If he's ever in a position of pushing his limits out of any sort of care for another, he'll be able to reach a new level of power capable of smacking down reality warpers.
What fourth wall?: He's fully aware that the world he lives in is a movie and, as such, is appropriately genre savvy and capable of exploiting the flimsy logic of fictional worlds to produce objects from nowhere for a quick gag, store objects in hammerspace, handwave minor details as long as it's funny or dramatic and not relevant to the plot (or being observed) and change his clothing in less than a second as long as he's offscreen. As the badass rival, he can also invoke the Rule of Cool for offscreen teleportation and dramatically perfect timing.
Teleportation: He can create invisible portals suitable for transportation or eavesdropping.
Devil Arm Stuff: If someone picks him up in his sword form, one of three things could happen: they could overpower him and establish dominance to use his powers as they see fit, he could overpower them and possess their body to use as he sees fit or they could possibly reach an agreement and work as equals.
Telepathy/Empathy: He can communicate telepathically, but primarily does this as a sword or when he otherwise can't speak normally. He also has the ability to sense emotions and can pick up on powerful ones without even trying. Between these two powers, he's also incredibly difficult to fool and can see through even perfect disguises.
Elemental resistances: He's immune to electricity and cold and resistant to fire. He sprawls out comfortably in freezing weather and survives grappling with a guy who's literally surrounded by fire.
Acting skills: He knows how to put on a show, that's for sure. This includes an impressive talent for altering his voice.

AU INFORMATION

AU CHARACTER NAME: Alastor
AGE: 4700-ish, prefers to look around 25
GRADE: Grad student
AU BACKSTORY: Thousands of years ago, Alastor was a daemon king ruling over a stormy part of the Outlands. He frequently visited the human world, making deals for power or favorable weather in exchange for material goods that were difficult to come by in the Outlands, and the ancient Greeks came to believe he was an aspect of the god Zeus. He was not all powerful, however, as a daemon emperor by the name of Mundus proved. He demanded Alastor's services in a war he was waging against humanity and, when Alastor refused and called him a coward, struck him down and sealed him away on a magical island that moved to always align with the point on Earth closest to Mundus' palace in the Outlands.

2000 years later, a half-daemon hunter, son of the daemon who ultimately defeated Mundus, arrived on the island to seal the emperor away once again. Alastor, bound to an electrical sword, challenged him for dominance and was overpowered. As they shared a common enemy, he served loyally as a magical weapon for a time...only to grow discontent as his new master lost interest in using him and left him in storage.

Believing he had no room to make demands of his master, Alastor instead manifested a physical body and took off, leaving the sword that served as his phylactery behind as a decoy. Unable to blend in among humans due to his obvious shapeshifting tells, he found his way to a region of the Outlands that both reflected and influenced human cinema. There, he met a hero that earned great respect, and joined a villainous group in the hopes of getting to fight him. Unfortunately, the hero was soon defeated by the leader of the villain group, robbing Alastor of that goal.

In place of the old hero, a new one with the same powers but a clear lack of experience emerged. While the rest of the organization Alastor worked for wanted to wipe him out before he learned the ropes, Alastor saw promise in him and chose to offer advice and guide him from the shadows, hoping to see his true potential and fight him when he reached his peak. It went well for a time, despite Alastor developing a crush on the hero's girlfriend as she was held captive as bait (which made the incident in which his superiors arranged a fake forced wedding between them as a trap somewhat awkward)...until the hero arrived at the evil organization's headquarters and found himself overwhelmed by an elite officer aptly called Fire Leo. Alastor intervened and saved Joe, but was wounded so severely that a segment of his power and self had to separate into an object in order to protect him from permanent damage.

Seeking a way to heal his wounds and restore his power, Alastor left the Outlands and quickly heard about Nightfall. With the dual goals of recovery and undercutting others that share Mundus' ambitions in mind, he made his way to Daybreak and, with his 2000 year gap in history in mind, enrolled as a student.

AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: The primary change to Alastor's personality is a result of benign and even heroic daemons being more prevalent in this setting. While his canon had him feeling pigeonholed into a villain due to demons being near universally seen as monsters, this version treats 'villainy' more as a means of getting heroes to fight him with everything they have than as an image to preserve. As such, he's much more willing to admit to not being a bad person, though he continues to deny outright heroic tendencies of his own as he believes his benevolent nature is what led to his long imprisonment.

RACE: Storm daemon
SECRET SOCIETY: Alastor formerly served a hunter group called Devil May Cry, though he has abandoned his position there due to his master's neglect.

POWERS: Alastor's main power set is weather control. While he can't control air temperature, he does have the ability to manipulate clouds, lightning, and wind with ease, capable of creating overcast skies for miles around or blanketing a city with fog. In his weakened state, however, he doesn't have the power to generate electricity or influence large scale weather. Instead, he fights by manipulating wind to make gusts capable of lifting humans, or even small tornadoes.

In a healthy state, he can also fly, teleport and spy via invisible wormholes, conjure an effectively unlimited number of swords, and heal incredibly quickly from even major injuries.

Even weakened, he still has access to some degree of magic, most notably using platforms of concentrated magic to jump off of to reach high places or maneuver in midair. He also retains an inhuman level of speed, strength, and endurance, and is a skilled sorcerer, capable of using any magic that would be within the limits of an average human mage. Doing so is ill-advised, however, as most of his power is being used to prevent his condition from deteriorating and diverting too much of it to use in magic will cause his burns to eat away at more of his body.

His variety of daemons are natural shapeshifters, so he has a large degree of control over his exact appearance. In his current state, he's fairly limited and can only manage a human body structure. Regardless of health, he always has purple skin, and is incapable of making his ears look human.

HOUSING: No preference, open to being an RA.

INTERVIEW SAMPLE PROMPT
(The following scenario is available to all characters who are apping in and is considered canon - all returning graduates are assessed by staff members to catch up on their lives and to assess whether they’re suited to work at the academy.)

3. WHAT KIND OF TASKS DO YOU WANT OR EXPECT TO DO HERE?

This is an all ages school, right? I've got something of a soft spot for kids, so I'd be happy to help out with wrangling the younger students. Maybe I'll even apply for a TA position, if I find a class that suits my specialties.

4. DESCRIBE YOUR COMMUNICATION STYLE AND YOUR CONDUCT AROUND BOTH FACULTY AND CURRENT STUDENTS.

I'll give fair warning, I've been called an 'insubordinate brat'. I don't tend to give respect where it isn't earned, so faculty are going to have another thing coming if they think they can boss me around just because they're the ones handing out grades.

I can't say I'll be exactly polite toward current students either, but if they can't handle a bit of sass, they're going to have bigger problems down the road. People who're still learning like that need a bit of a challenge now and then, just to make sure they're giving their all.

5. WOULD YOU BE COMFORTABLE WITH MENTORING CURRENT STUDENTS OR ACTING IN AN ADVISORY ROLE?

Sure. I already kinda did that pretty recently, so I wouldn't mind at all if I wound up teaching a few lessons here, too.

6. WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR A SCHOOL TO PROVIDE TO ITS STUDENTS?

Motivation. You can give all the instruction you want, but a student isn't going to learn much if they don't care about what's being taught. If you really wanna make sure people pick up the lessons, you have to give them reason to think it's worth their time.

7. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE STUDENTS WHO ARE DEFIANT, ACTING OUT, OR OTHERWISE AT ODDS WITH PARTS OF SCHOOL LIFE?

Think about what's causing the friction, and face it head on. If something isn't working, you've gotta address it directly, and taking it out on other parts of your life isn't going to be much help.

8. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE STUDENTS WHO ARE STRUGGLING OR DEPRESSED?

Don't give up. Sure, it might look rough now, but you'll never know if you could overcome the obstacles in your path if you don't try. Just think about someone you look up to, and ask yourself where they'd be if they gave up on something because it was hard or unpleasant. And if you need motivation...just think about the feeling of satisfaction you'll get when you succeed despite everything that was working against you.

9. WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON A STUDENT SHOULD LEAVE WITH?

How to know when to respect your limits, and when to face your fears. Cowardice is an insult to yourself, but there's no point in getting yourself killed trying to bite off more than you can chew.

11. IF YOU COULD TELL CURRENT STUDENTS ONE THING ON GRADUATING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?.

Don't assume you know everything. You might feel on top of the world right now, but you can still find yourself on the wrong end of some nasty surprises.

16. ONE OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF ACADEMY FACULTY IS PROTECTING STUDENTS FROM THAT WHICH MIGHT DO THEM HARM. THIS APPLIES TO GRADUATES AND ASSISTANTS AS WELL. TELL US HOW EQUIPPED YOU ARE TO DO THIS.

I didn't get the nickname 'blademaster' from twiddling my thumbs. I've got a couple thousand years of swordsmanship practice behind me, not to mention powerful magic. A typical threat is barely even going to be a warm up to me.

17. WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRIFICE TO PROTECT CURRENT STUDENTS?

I'm not here to play hero. I'll do my part to look out for the kids, but don't expect me to go and put myself on the chopping block for someone else's sake.
